Paulo Coelho
I remember when I first started writing I would ask the question that many people who first find the creative path ask: Do I have talent? And I hoped that some wise teacher would say that I was a talented writer and that I should devote myself to writing. Now, having trod this path for years, I know that no one can affirm or deny my talent. It is what it is. We all have creative gifts. We can either put our talent to good use or squander it. We can either walk the creative path or become lost in chaos of creation.
There is a deeper and more important question within the question. When we ask do we have talent, the hidden question is: Will I be rich, famous and successful? And the answer for many of us on the creative path is no. Most creative leaders will work in obscurity and receive only a pittance for their labors. If money and fame is your desire, there are easier paths to walk. To walk the creative path is do it because you love it. The choice is yours.

Life is about balance, not extremes. Sometimes we can be too careful. We stay in the harbor and never leave because we are afraid of what might happen out on the open ocean. Sometimes we throw caution to the wind and venture into dangerous waters. We behave in a reckless manner that endangers others as well as ourselves. Too much of anything is harmful.
So have you been sitting in the harbor too long? Have you been waiting for the perfect wind so long that you have forgotten how to sail? Or have you thrown yourself into an adventure without adequate preparation? Are you seasick from the bumpy ride and looking for a safe harbor? Life is about balance, not extremes.
Some writers sit on their manuscripts too long, wanting to make sure each word is perfect. I have read stories of writers making changes even as the book is headed to press. Perfection does not exist. We can always make changes in the next edition. Other writers fail to put enough time into perfecting the manuscript. They are sloppy. Which are you?
Creative Practice
This week raise the sail on the boat that you have left in the harbor. Prepare to sail into unknown waters. Is there a manuscript you can send out that you have been unwilling to submit to the eyes of critics and editors? Is there a painting that you have been wanting to complete, but have not had the courage? Set sail for the unknown.

Paulo Coelho
"It's only those who are persistent and willing to study things deeply, who achieve the master work."
Brazilian Novelist
1947 -
Most people give up on their dreams too soon. Every time you are knocked down, you need to stand back up. The difference between the winners and the losers is that the winners keep going long after the losers have quit. Quitting is not an option. Even if you are bleeding with two broken legs, you need to stand back up and keep dancing.
Creative leaders need to be constantly learning new techniques and ideas for use with their art or writing. Even the masters continue to study. No one has perfected his art. Everyone needs to continue to grow and develop their skills. What have you learned today? Last week? Last month? Last year?
Enjoy the visual.

1947 -
When one door closes, another one opens. There is a method buried within the madness of the world. The universe wants us to succeed, to find our way home, to taste the fruit of the vine. Yet most of us do not listen with our hearts. We hear only the shrill sounds bombarding our ears. To be successful, we must first understand the power of desire.
Do you have the passion to be a creative leader? Do you desire to write? Then write as if your life depended on it. Do you desire to paint? Then paint as if your heart will explode if you don't put paint to canvas. When our actions are aligned with our passion, then the universe opens and we are lifted into the heavens. We are able to find beauty in the mundane like a jar of pickles, a can of tuna or a bottle of orange juice.
When one door opens, another one closes. The end can be found in the beginning. We all travel circles within circles. And nothing changes but what must remain the same. So believe that your gift of creativity is yours to share with the universe and accept that the universe is a flower within your heart.

Fear causes us to lose touch with ourselves. When we let fear win, our art will not reflect our heart. Although fear is a natural part of being human, we need to stand strong and not let fear dominate us. Listen to your heart and it will teach you how to conquer your fears.

"When you find your path, you must not be afraid. You need to have sufficient courage to make mistakes. Disappointment, defeat, and despair are the tools God uses to show us the way."

"We must never stop dreaming. Dreams provide nourishment for the soul, just as a meal does for the body."
Brazilian Novelist
1947 -
What are your dreams? What would you like to do? Where would you like to go? What places would you like to visit? I would love to visit China because of the history and the past civilizations. I want to Japan because of my interest in haiku. I want to visit Peru because of the Inca civilization. I have traveled to 45 of the 50 states in the United States. I have been fortunate to step foot on the soil of Jamaica, Canada and Mexico. For me as a creative leader, visits to other places stir my imagination and allow me to see the world in new ways. Again, I ask what are your dreams? Are you feeding your soul? Do your dreams give you nourishment?
