William Trevor
"I believe in not quite knowing. A writer needs to be doubtful, questioning. I write out of curiosity and bewilderment."
Irish Novelist
1928 -
I believe that all creative leaders need to doubt and question. If we just accept the world as is, there is no progress. It is only through doubt that we are able to follow new paths and create new opportunities. Cultivate the doubt in you life. Use it to find your way. Some people have a difficult time living in the uncertainty of doubt. They want everything to be black and white. Unfortunately, that is not the real world. Uncertainty is a given. You and I don't know when we will die. Or when we are born. Security is momentary. Success is fleeting. Learn to live with doubt. Learn to question. Learn to be curious. Then maybe you will be happy.

Henri Matisse
"Every day that dawns is a gift to me and I take it that way. I accept it gratefully without looking beyond it . . . . I think only of the joy of seeing the sun rise once more and of being able to work a little bit, even under difficult conditions."
French Artist
1869 - 1954
Each day we live is a gift that we often forget to be thankful for. We become so busy with the hundreds of tasks that we have to do that we lose sight of the fact that life is a blessing. Matisse wrote these words after a second operation from which he did not expect to wake. Even though he was physically in pain, he found joy in being able to paint. Each day is a gift. Are you living it to the fullest? Are you grateful for the life you have? Does your creative work bring you joy?

James Baldwin
"One can give nothing whatever without giving oneself — that is to say, risking oneself. If one cannot risk oneself then one is simply incapable of giving."
American Novelist
1924 - 1987
All art is risk. As creative leaders we risk being vulnerable to criticism and ridicule. We risk doubt and failure. We risk being misunderstood. Yet, there is no creation without risk. There is no art without giving of oneself.
Taking a risk requires that we step out of our comfort zone and try something new. Taking risk helps us to grow and progress as artists. Taking a risk means that we might fail. Taking a risk requires courage.
What risks are you not taking because you are afraid? What risks do you want to take but you don't have the courage? If you knew that you would die in a year, what risks would you take today? What truth have you not told because you are afraid of what others might say?

"The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity to sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed."
American Novelist
1899 - 1961
As writers, artists and creative leaders we often are vulnerable to the hostile, negative behavior of people who do not understand us and what we represent. These negative people can be our friends and family initially and the wider world eventually as our creative ideas and works try to find their place in that world. We need to remain strong and courageous in the face of negative attacks.
As creative leaders we often sacrifice much to achieve our dreams. We become so focused on and obsessed with our work that we ignore family and friends. We miss out on the joys of life. We may forget to take care of our health. We drink and/or take drugs to kill the demons chasing us. We suffer ridicule at the hands of those who don't understand us and what we do.
People may hate us when we tell the truth. Often people are not ready for the truth we have to speak. They may criticize and condemn us. They may laugh at us. We must find the discipline and the courage to speak the truth anyway — to open up and share our thoughts and feelings, to share the beauty we see.
